Submissions

How it works:

If you want to submit, feel free! We accept unsolicited submissions forever and always. We just have a few rules before you go ahead and submit your poetry.

  1. There can be no more than 3 poems per submission.
  2. Please limit the number of submissions to one at a time until you hear back from us. Once you hear back, you are free to submit again.
  3. Please refrain from submitting poetry that engages in vulgar language. We like to maintain an evocative environment for all ages. This also applies to theme; while we look for good poetry of any design and theme, we would prefer not to receive poetry that pushes the extremes of sensitive topics (for example, suicide). We want this journal to be a learning experience for people of (mostly) all ages and backgrounds. We are a safe space for those, young and old, who wish to explore poetry.
  4. This is a request we don’t want to have to make, due to the egalitarian nature of the journal, but if possible, please consider submitting work that does not have weird indentations or otherwise strange formatting. The website can be a bit of a hassle to deal with sometimes. If you so desire to submit such work, feel free, and if it is good enough, we will see if we can make exceptions. Please, though, consider the formatting.
  5. No reprints! All original work that has not been published elsewhere before (including social media or personal websites). I may be convinced otherwise given strange circumstances.
  6. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  7. Simultaneous submissions are welcome, we just ask that you remain communicative with us about whether the pieces are accepted elsewhere so that we can remove them from our queue.
  8. As has already been explained, we are open to (almost) any sort of poem. Send your best!

Send your submission as a maximum of three poems, along with a cover letter and a short bio (which will be listed with your poetry if accepted), to the email address luckylizardjournal@gmail.com. You may paste the poems into the body of the email or send them as a Word attachment. If there are any issues with the submission we will contact you immediately to correct them. Rudeness or brash ignorance of the rules indicated will result in the immediate deletion of your submission.

We publish biannually, a winter edition on (or before) December 1st and a summer edition on (or before) June 1st. All submissions garnered up until 12 am EST exactly one week before either the 1st of December or June will be considered for the respective issue. All following submissions will be considered for the following issue. The last two statements are up to my discretion at the time of publication, so I may be less lenient if I am looking to publish sooner. In each edition, 20 poems are published, showcasing the best of what was submitted, except for the premier issue, which published less poems because there were less submissions. The issues are electronic only at the moment. There are no specific overarching themes per issue, just good poetry.

We are no longer responding to poetry entries which have been rejected. If you do not get a response by the time the journal comes out (December / June) then assume your work was not accepted. Thank you!

This is an amateur literary journal and we cannot offer payment at the time. All we ask is the recognition of the First North American Serial Rights upon acceptance of your work, which allows us to publish your work once under us and then the rights revert back to you. We also ask that you give Lucky Lizard Journal credit as the first publisher when your work appears elsewhere. We will also be storing your work in our archive (the online Journal), given your work is accepted. Published (archived) work will stay on the website, no matter what.
